How to use Research Paper Summarizer

  1. Paste or upload a readable paper and confirm that you are authorized to send its text for processing.
  2. Inspect the parsed text and coverage, including missing pages or excluded JATS sections.
  3. Summarize, then review research question, method, findings and limitations; check each state, quotation and location.
  4. Copy or download the reviewed summary with its provenance and coverage before leaving.

A structured summary keeps four questions visible

A structured paper summary organizes reading around the research question, method, findings and limitations. That structure helps you see whether the reported results answer the question using the described approach. It also makes gaps in the supplied text more visible than a smooth paragraph can. This tool generates prose for each section and displays the exact supporting quotations separately. It is intended as an aid to reading a paper, not a replacement for the paper or a certificate that its conclusions are correct.

The research-question section should identify what the authors investigated without expanding the question to a broader population or intervention. The method section describes the study approach and relevant sample or setting. Findings retain the reported direction, scale and qualifications of the results. Limitations distinguish the authors stated cautions from an absence of located evidence. A short abstract may offer some of these elements, but a summary of supplied excerpt text must not imply that the full methods, tables and discussion were examined.

Read the four sections together. A statistically adjusted association does not automatically answer a causal question. A planned protocol has no completed findings merely because it describes an intended analysis. A feasibility result does not establish clinical effectiveness, and a model benchmark does not by itself establish performance in deployment. The summarizer is instructed to preserve those boundaries, but the reviewer must still compare generated wording with the design and evidence. Fluency can conceal a change in meaning, so check the verbs as carefully as the numbers.

Evidence links support checking, not automatic trust

The report labels its generated prose and keeps verbatim quotations in separate blockquotes. Deterministic post-processing verifies proposed quotations against the parsed document after normalizing whitespace and typographic quotation marks. Unmatched quotations are removed. Important prose without a verified supporting span is marked unsupported by a located span. That label is an invitation to verify, revise or omit the statement; it is not evidence that the claim is false. Conversely, a quotation match only establishes that the words occur in the supplied text.

Check whether the quotation supports every meaningful part of the prose. A sentence reporting an outcome at four weeks does not establish that an effect persisted for six months. A result in one subgroup does not necessarily describe the full sample. A confidence interval, comparison group or adjustment can change interpretation even if a headline number remains the same. The summarizer does not compute new effect sizes or independently validate statistical calculations. Keep the original reported estimates and their context when using the summary in notes.

Use locations to move back to the source. PDF p. 7 means the seventh page in the uploaded file, which may have a different printed journal page number. Printed labels are shown only when detected rather than guessed. JATS XML is organized by section and paragraph and explicitly has no available page reference. Pasted text uses heading and character locations. If text extraction changes a table or reading order, inspect the original visual document before accepting a generated account of what the table reports.

Use the summary as the start of a careful reading workflow

First verify document identity, access and coverage. Supply the paper by upload or paste. Check that the text includes the full body; an abstract cannot represent the full paper. Text-layer PDFs, TXT, Markdown and JATS XML are supported. Scanned pages require external OCR, which is not implemented here. Encrypted or corrupt PDFs need an authorized readable replacement. Never upload material you do not have permission to send for processing.

The tool processes at most 150,000 characters. A longer document is explicitly marked as partial coverage, and the report describes only the covered portion. Pages with no usable text or failed parsing are also reported. These limitations matter particularly when the discussion, funding statement or supplement appears late in a file. Missing information in an excerpt is not proof that the complete paper lacks it. Review the loaded text before generating and retain the coverage note when you save or share a summary.

After reading, revise your notes using the original paper and any relevant supplementary materials. A structured summary cannot conduct a systematic review, appraise an entire evidence base or determine how findings apply to a particular patient or policy. Related extraction and appraisal tools can support separate steps with their own boundaries. Two papers are included across the summarizer and extraction presets; rerunning an already processed paper is free. Copy or download the report before leaving this tab. Signup opens AnswerThis but does not transfer the paper, save the summary or start a batch.

Supplied documents and processing

Upload or paste a paper you are authorized to process, then inspect its parsed text and coverage. Only supplied text is processed; this tool does not retrieve articles. Publication version and licence are not independently verified. Reports include the processing time, source description and coverage.

Paper text is sent to our backend and OpenAI. This application does not store paper text or results; only allowance identifiers persist. Provider retention terms apply. See OpenAI data controls and retention. Copy or download your reviewed result before closing the tab.

Frequently asked questions

What does the summary contain?

Four sections cover research question, method, findings and limitations. Each separates generated prose from exact quotations, source locations and a found, missing or ambiguous state. Copy and text download include provenance and coverage.

Can I summarize an incomplete paper?

You can process supplied excerpts, but the summary only describes covered text. Inspect parsed/total PDF pages and included/excluded JATS sections. A missing section in the input is not evidence that the full paper lacks it.

How do I check whether quotations support the summary?

Compare every claim, number, unit, direction and timing term with its quotation and surrounding passage. A research question is not a finding. The deterministic guard flags some mismatches as ambiguous; a found state still requires your review.

Which files and page references are supported?

Upload text-layer PDF, TXT, Markdown or JATS XML up to 25 MB. OCR is not supported. Encrypted, corrupt and scanned files need a readable replacement. PDF page numbers are separate from printed labels; JATS uses section/paragraph references with pages unavailable. Coverage is explicit, including the 150,000-character limit.

Which paper text should I supply?

Upload or paste an authorized readable paper including the sections you want processed. Check the title, body and supplements before generating. An abstract alone is not the full paper. Only supplied text is processed; the tool does not retrieve papers or bypass access restrictions.

How does the 2 papers allowance work?

This tool includes 2 papers per browser, shared across extraction presets and the summarizer. A distinct document hash counts once after successful processing. Re-running the same paper is free. Confirmed processing failures are refunded; a lost response or browser storage failure leaves allowance status uncertain. Copying or downloading an existing result is free.

Does signup save the paper or unlock more runs here?

Signup opens the AnswerThis app. It does not unlock more runs on this page or transfer your draft. Copy or download your result first. This application does not store paper text or results; only allowance identifiers persist. Paper text goes to our backend and OpenAI; provider retention terms apply.
