Extract Limitations from a Research Paper
Locate author-stated limitations with exact quotations. Optional model-inferred concerns stay separately labelled and require reviewer judgment.

Process up to 150,000 characters. Longer papers are explicitly marked as partial coverage; inspect extracted text before processing.

How to use Extract Limitations from a Research Paper
- Paste or upload an authorized readable paper and inspect its identity and coverage.
- Review parsed text and coverage. Select extraction fields; inferred limitations are optional and off by default.
- Process the paper, then compare generated information with every exact quotation and source location.
- Copy or download the reviewed result before leaving the page.
Separate what the authors stated from what a reviewer infers
An author-stated limitation is a qualification the paper itself makes about its design, measurements, analysis, interpretation or applicability. This preset starts with limitations selected and requests evidence for those statements. It does not assume that every mention of a small sample, short follow-up or single study site is an author-stated limitation. Read the exact quotation and surrounding argument to confirm that the authors actually presented it as a constraint on interpretation rather than as a neutral description of their work.
Model-inferred limitations are optional and off by default. When enabled, they appear separately with a clear model-inferred label and an unsupported-by-a-located-span warning. An inference can be a useful question for a reviewer, but it must not be attributed to the authors. For example, recruitment from one clinic might raise a question about applicability to other settings without establishing selection bias. The reviewer must decide whether the concern follows from the design and matters to the intended use of the findings.
Finding a genuine sentence does not settle how serious a limitation is. The direction, likely magnitude and relevance of its consequences may depend on details elsewhere in the paper. An author can acknowledge missing observations without establishing whether the missingness changed an estimate. A statement about a convenience sample may affect one target population more than another. Keep the authors wording available and record your own reasoning separately rather than merging both into one apparently sourced conclusion.
Use limitations carefully in a literature review
Begin with the question your review is trying to answer. A limitation matters because it constrains a particular inference, not because it appears on a generic checklist. Compare how studies measured the outcome, selected participants, handled missing data and defined the setting. Group similar concerns only after confirming that they have comparable meanings. Short follow-up for an immediate physiological outcome is different from short follow-up for durability of an intervention. The preset locates candidate passages; it does not make those comparative judgments.
In a narrative synthesis, distinguish limitations of individual studies from limitations of the body of evidence and limitations of your review process. A retrieved paper cannot establish that the entire literature lacks a population or method. Likewise, a statement in one discussion does not establish a novel research gap today. Use the extracted passage to support an appropriately bounded description of that study, then examine additional evidence before generalizing. Related research-gap and literature-review tools have their own search boundaries and do not replace a systematic search.
Absence of a limitations section is not proof that the study has no limitations. Relevant caveats may appear in methods, results, figure legends, supplementary material or the conclusion. If those parts were not supplied or did not survive parsing, the result describes only the available text. Missing and ambiguous rows should prompt a document check. Do not turn either state into a favorable appraisal, a compliance score or a claim that the authors concealed a concern. These are evidence-location states, not judgments about intent.
Verify each passage and preserve an honest audit trail
Every author-stated limitation needs a quotation that matches normalized parsed text. Unverifiable quotations are discarded; without evidence, the tool does not retain an asserted author-stated limitation as a finding. PDF locations use PDF page numbers, which can differ from journal page labels. JATS references use sections and paragraphs with pages unavailable. For pasted text, use the heading and character location to navigate back to the source. Match the passage against the original document before quoting it in your own writing.
Inspect coverage before you generate. Text-layer PDFs, plain text, Markdown and JATS XML are supported; scanned documents require OCR elsewhere. Some PDF pages or table structures can be unreadable even when other pages parse successfully. The coverage banner identifies partial input and documents longer than 150,000 characters. A conclusion based on the covered portion cannot represent an unseen supplement or a truncated discussion. Upload an authorized readable copy and include relevant supplements in the supplied text.
After review, export the extraction table and note which statements you accepted, reworded or rejected. Preserve the distinction between a quotation, a generated paraphrase and your own appraisal in the working review record. Switching to the methods or datasets preset, or requesting a summary of the same successfully processed paper, does not consume another paper allowance. Two papers are included per browser across these routes. Signup opens the AnswerThis app without transferring this result, so copy or download the evidence record before leaving the page.
Supplied documents and processing
Upload or paste a paper you are authorized to process, then inspect its parsed text and coverage. Only supplied text is processed; this tool does not retrieve articles. Publication version and licence are not independently verified. Reports include the processing time, source description and coverage.

Frequently asked questions
What if there is no limitations section?
Author-stated cautions may occur in the discussion or elsewhere. The tool looks in supplied text and marks missing or ambiguous evidence honestly. No located limitation does not mean the study has none, especially with partial coverage.
Are inferred concerns attributed to the authors?
No. Optional model-inferred limitations default off and stay separately labelled, ambiguous and unsupported by a located span. An author-stated limitation requires a verified quotation. Never merge the two when taking notes.
Can I use these limitations in a literature review?
Use the extraction as a reading aid. Verify the authors’ wording and its context, cite the original paper, and distinguish your own appraisal from their stated concerns. A limitation does not automatically invalidate a study.
Which files and page references are supported?
Upload text-layer PDF, TXT, Markdown or JATS XML up to 25 MB. OCR is not supported. Encrypted, corrupt and scanned files need a readable replacement. PDF page numbers are separate from printed labels; JATS uses section/paragraph references with pages unavailable. Coverage is explicit, including the 150,000-character limit.
Which paper text should I supply?
Upload or paste an authorized readable paper including the sections you want processed. Check the title, body and supplements before generating. An abstract alone is not the full paper. Only supplied text is processed; the tool does not retrieve papers or bypass access restrictions.
How does the 2 papers allowance work?
This tool includes 2 papers per browser, shared across extraction presets and the summarizer. A distinct document hash counts once after successful processing. Re-running the same paper is free. Confirmed processing failures are refunded; a lost response or browser storage failure leaves allowance status uncertain. Copying or downloading an existing result is free.
Does signup save the paper or unlock more runs here?
Signup opens the AnswerThis app. It does not unlock more runs on this page or transfer your draft. Copy or download your result first. This application does not store paper text or results; only allowance identifiers persist. Paper text goes to our backend and OpenAI; provider retention terms apply.
