How to use Reporting Checklist Checker

  1. Select the guideline and edition that match your report; choose a study-design variant for STROBE.
  2. Paste the manuscript or upload a readable file. Choose Full manuscript only when the entire relevant report is supplied; otherwise select Excerpt.
  3. Check reporting, then inspect each requirement, verdict, quotation and location against the official checklist.
  4. Copy or download the text report or CSV. Resolve missing information with the author team before preparing a journal submission.

What to check

  • Confirm the guideline edition and document stage.
  • Check all applicable parts of an item, not just a matching phrase.
  • Compare quotations and locations with tables, supplements and the original manuscript.
  • Treat the findings as an AI-assisted draft requiring author confirmation, never certification.

Choose the reporting guideline before interpreting the report

A reporting guideline helps a reader find the information needed to understand a study. The right choice depends on the research design and the document’s stage. PRISMA 2020 addresses completed systematic reviews; PRISMA-P addresses review protocols, and PRISMA-ScR addresses scoping reviews. CONSORT is for trial reports, while SPIRIT is for trial protocols. An otherwise detailed document can look incomplete when assessed with the wrong checklist. Confirm those boundaries before spending your manuscript allowance.

Other options target observational studies, diagnostic accuracy, animal experiments, prediction models, economic evaluations, healthcare improvement and qualitative research. Their items are not interchangeable. COREQ concentrates on interviews and focus groups; SRQR covers qualitative research more broadly. STROBE requires a cohort, case-control or cross-sectional selection because recruitment, analysis and outcome reporting differ between those designs. A catalog marked verification pending cannot be run. Its presence in the selector is not a claim that its assessment is available.

Read the findings as a revision aid

The report retains official item identifiers and groups the findings by section. Each item has a paraphrased requirement, a verdict, supporting quotations when available and an explanation of missing information. Met means the supplied text appears to address the applicable requirement. Not met is reserved for a full submitted scope that lacks adequate reporting. Unclear includes partial descriptions, ambiguous statements and evidence that could not be verified. Conditional items can be not applicable only when a reason supports that decision.

Begin with unclear items, because a short clarification or an overlooked supplementary table may resolve them. Then review apparently met items: a genuine quotation can still be interpreted incorrectly by a model. The summary counts describe this particular assessment, not a compliance percentage or ranking. Do not compare counts between different guidelines as if they measured the same construct. Keep an author-reviewed record of decisions and use the official source to resolve questions about the concise summaries.

Prepare a complete, readable submission

Text extraction affects what the model can see. Multi-column PDFs may reorder sentences, tables may lose their cell relationships, and figures may contain text that is not extractable. Inspect the loaded manuscript before checking. PDF evidence locations refer to the extracted page markers, not a journal’s printed page label. Pasted text locations use character offsets and the nearest recognizable preceding heading. These references help you navigate; they do not replace comparison with the original formatted document.

Use Excerpt for an abstract, a methods section or any deliberately incomplete document. The model must not treat silence in that excerpt as an omission from the whole paper. Supplements, registration records and protocols are not fetched automatically. Include authorized relevant text within the limit, or assess it separately with an appropriate scope. Download the report before reloading or closing the tab. The application retains a manuscript hash for free rechecks, not a saved manuscript library or a draft transferred into AnswerThis.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload unpublished research?

Manuscript text is sent to our backend and OpenAI for assessment. This application does not store manuscript text; OpenAI retention policies apply. Upload only material you are authorized to share with those services. The current manuscript and report remain in this tab until you reload or close it.

Does this guarantee compliance, and why is AGREE II disabled?

No. This is an AI-assisted reporting review, not certification or a study-quality assessment. AGREE II is a guideline appraisal instrument with 23 items, six domains and 1–7 ratings, requiring at least two appraisers. Commercial use is restricted, so its dropdown option is disabled and no substitute or score is generated.

Why are items unclear or not applicable?

Unclear means the evidence is partial, ambiguous or cannot be verified. Absence in an excerpt always stays unclear. Not applicable is available only for conditional items with an explicit reason and a verified quotation establishing inapplicability. A verified quotation proves where words came from; a reviewer must still decide whether those words satisfy the requirement.

Which manuscript formats work?

Paste text or upload a text-based PDF, TXT or Markdown file up to 10 MB and 150,000 extracted characters. DOCX not supported. Scanned PDFs need OCR first. PDF quotes cite page markers; pasted text cites a nearby preceding heading and a zero-based character offset.

Which editions and checklist wording are used?

The selector shows the pinned edition, source and verification state. Item summaries are paraphrased; consult the official checklist wording via the linked source. Unverified catalogs are disabled. CONSORT-AI 2020 extends CONSORT 2010 and is never silently merged into CONSORT 2025. PRISMA 2020 and ARRIVE 2.0 sources permit attributed CC BY reuse.

How many manuscripts can I check for free?

This tool includes 1 successful free run per browser. Failed requests and copying or downloading an existing result do not use another run. The unit is one manuscript across all five pages. Rechecking the same normalized text against another checklist is free, subject to the service’s daily request budget; edited manuscript text is a new manuscript.
