The MLA 8 option exists for work that explicitly requires the eighth edition. It uses its own pinned CSL file rather than relabelling the ninth-edition output. Work and container remain separate concepts. A journal article has an article title and a journal container; a chapter has a chapter title and a book container. Preserve contributor roles and location details where the editor supports them. For a website, inspect the item’s publication information rather than treating a domain name as the author or copying an undated footer into the date field.
Review MLA 8 in your manuscript
Review legacy references as a complete Works Cited list. Check container boundaries, dates and locators against the requested MLA 8 instructions, especially if references were copied from different sources. Parenthetical citations should identify the entry and the relevant passage. Do not insert APA-style years or assume that one identical book example makes the two MLA editions interchangeable.

What if my MLA 8 source has no publication date?
Leave an unknown date blank and let the pinned style handle missing information. Do not invent a year from a footer, file timestamp or the day you looked up the source.
